In order to live healthier, change is needed. If we try to change too much at once, we could easily become discouraged.
Instead of completely changing your lifestyle all at once, make a few small changes to your every day life to get started.
We all have our unhealthy habits: reaching for dessert after a meal, drinking soda to satisfy thirst, or grabbing the most salty or sweet snack available. Try integrating simple healthy habits into your life as a step toward being a healthier person.
To be healthier, make it a habit to…
1. Be portion aware
As you serve yourself lunch or dinner, pay attention to how much food you are piling on your plate. It’s best to take less to prevent overeating. Sometimes our eyes are bigger than our stomachs. If you just take a spoonful or two of each dish, you will most likely feel full once you finish the plate. Make it a habit to stop eating once your hunger is satisfied.
2. Eat breakfast
Breakfast can be one of the easiest meals to make, yet it’s the most commonly skipped meal. Make it a habit to enjoy breakfast every morning. If you are short on time in the morning, prep the night before. For example, you could set a box of cereal with a bowl and spoon on the table to remind yourself to eat before you go. You could also make breakfast to-go with homemade breakfast bars or simply packing fruit and yogurt in a bag.
3. Watch sugar intake
It’s far too easy to consume too much sugar in a day. Remember, sugar is a common ingredient in foods other than desserts. Sugar can be found in orange juice, cereal, granola bars, fruit and more. To help reduce sugar intake, make it a habit to read the label to see how many grams of sugar are in a food before purchasing it.
4. Be active for at least 30 minutes a day
Even with the busiest schedule, it’s possible to fit 30 minutes of activity into the day. Take a walk during lunch hour, perform crunches while watching TV or simply do some squats while brushing your teeth. You do not necessarily have to go to the gym to be active every day. There are simple, quick ways to be more active.Think about how you can include activity into your day, then make it a part of your daily routine.
All it takes is small changes in your life to become healthier. As you gradually make healthier choices and practice better habits, you will get closer to your health and weight loss goals each day without feeling overwhelmed.
