Why? The real question is: Why not?
Not only does it aid in losing weight, preventing heart disease, cancer and diabetes, it’s a great tool for anti-aging and also helps to strengthen your skin and hair. If you don’t know about this miracle product yet, it’s definitely time you did.
Although the western world is only recently learning of the many benefits of coconuts, they have been a staple in the diets of Polynesian and Asian communities for centuries. Interestingly enough, people in the islands of the South Pacific live generally healthier than most people in the western world. They are free of aches and pains and although they are subjected to long hours in the harsh sun, they have extremely low rates of cancer! Polynesian women are also famed for their beautiful and luxurious hair.
Hmmm, maybe there is something to this strange fruit.
Let’s dissect the coconut for a sec:
They are tough on the outside, but yummy and soft on the inside. (a lot like our men! ; ) Although the meat and juice are extremely healthful, the oil is arguably the most nutritious. Coconut oil is antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory.
It is a great source of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which have proven to have many health benefits, including killing bacteria that cause ulcers, bladder infections, gum disease, cavities and many other illnesses. MCFAs also kill fungi and yeasts that cause ringworm, athlete’s foot, and candidiasis and kill viruses that cause influenza, measles, herpes, mononucleosis, and hepatitis C.
And it doesn’t stop there! As a skin lotion, no other oil can compare. Coconut oil helps prevent the skin from developing liver spots and other blemishes caused by aging and over exposure to sunlight. It also keeps the connective tissue in our skin strong and supple so it doesn’t sag and wrinkle.
Now that you know how awesome coconut oil is, let’s get to it and start using this stuff!
Here are my top 10 favorite uses for coconut oil.
1. As a moisturizer
Apply small amounts to face, neck and body. Small amounts applied frequently allow the skin to absorb it best. Say goodbye to dry skin!
2. In cooking
Get more out of your food! Coconut oil aids in digestion and the absorption of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. I use it with eggs, stir fry’s and pretty much anything I cook in a pan. Coconut flour is also an awesome substitute for other flours when baking!
3. As a deep treatment/ dandruff cure for hair
Simply apply to scalp and throughout hair. You can choose to wear it overnight with a shower cap or just leave it on for a couple hours. Do once or twice a week and you’ll have dandruff free, stronger and shinier hair in no time.
4. As a makeup remover
Dab some on a cotton ball and watch the magic work! You’ll also be restoring your skin’s elasticity and helping to remove wrinkles! Win-win!
5. As an eye cream
Use it under the eyes to remove bags, puffiness and wrinkles. Try it out tonight!
6. When shaving
Swap it with your normal shaving cream and you’ll get a smooth shave with no irritation and you’ll be moisturizing at the same time!
7. As a personal lubricant/ massage oil
Yup! Safe, natural and tasty! : )
8. On scrapes and cuts
Coconut oil forms a thin, chemical layer, which protects the wound from outside dust, bacteria and virus.
9. As a body scrub
Mix with sugar and use in the shower for soft, supple skin.
10. As an aid to your fitness regimen
Coconut oil has been proven to stimulate your metabolism, improve thyroid function, and escalate energy levels, all of which help decrease your unwanted fat, while increasing muscle. Take a spoonful before a workout or add to your post workout smoothie.
There you have it! Coconut oil is affordable, readily available and completely natural. Offering a myriad of health benefits, it truly treats beauty from the inside out. These are my favorite uses for coconut oil. Feel free to share yours in the comments below!
