Every woman has a different relationship with bags. Some women relish in the thought of accessory shopping, and own many more bags than they could ever need. As a result, they don’t end up using most of them and a lot of great purses end up going to waste. Some other women hate the thought of shopping for new purses and think they only need one “useful” bag to get through every day. But the useful bag usually doesn’t match every item of clothing you own, and let’s face it; they age over time just like everything else. No matter what your personal attitude toward bags is, chances are there are four bags you will need at some point in your life. Read on to find out what they are and why you need them.

The Little Black Bag

Similar to the little black dress, this bag should be appropriate for just about any occasion. It should be simple and classic in design, displaying a certain type of timelessness. You’d be surprised by how many different accessory stores, including both big brand name businesses and local establishments, sell these simple little bags. With so many options out there, it might be surprisingly difficult to find one of great quality that will last for a long time. Searching on department store websites like Bloomingdale’s or Macy’s will help you compare different brands, materials, and prices. That way, you can make a great, long-lasting selection without breaking the bank.

The Mini Wristlet

The small, lightweight purse with ideally only one zipper or button is perfect for days that you’ll be very active. Active doesn’t mean just going to the gym, either (although it certainly could come in handy for holding your phone, ID, and keys) while you work out). It’s ideal for days when you’re out and about and doing a lot of walking around or doing some type of outdoor activity. Shopping sprees. Concerts. A walk in your local park. Or maybe even when you have to run a quick errand and only have a few minutes to pack your necessary items before taking off. It’s a great way to consolidate your absolute necessities, like a cell phone, without trying to squeeze everything in your pockets.

The Traveling Tote

Though the traveling tote is, you guessed it, best for long car rides, airplane trips, and train travel, this tote is also really useful for those days where you’re probably going to stay in the same place for a long time. A beach or by a poolside are good examples of this. You’ll need a decent-sized tote to carry things like a towel and sunscreen. Of course, this bag will also come in handy when you have to sit in the same spot for a long time in a slightly less fun place, like an airplane. You can pack up books or magazines you’ve been meaning to read, or even your laptop.

The Formal Bag

Since this is a bag that you’ll probably use for a specific event, you’ll likely want to visit a specialty store that sells formal wear. A store that sells cocktail dresses or even prom dresses is a good bet, since they’ll have a lot of neat beaded purses and satin purses – perfect for any formal event. There will also be a lot of material and color options to fit with your whole look. Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) is a good national company to look at if you’re interested in saving some more money for that one night, especially if that’s the only time you’re planning on using that purse.
