It’s fairly well-known that indoor tanning can damage skin and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Even though Americans are aware of the health risks, many still go to salons for cosmetic reasons.

It’s best to stop going to salons all together because tanning is never healthy. Essentially, a tan is the result of skin trying to protect itself from ultraviolet rays.

However, if you do decide to tan, it’s important to keep the health risks in mind every time you go.

It’s a time of year when more people are going to salons before a sunny vacation or to just keep a glow during the winter months.

Going to tan this winter? Follow these guidelines:

1. Go in moderation

Going tanning every day will quickly damage the skin. Keep track of how many times you are going. Try to limit yourself to only a few times during the winter months. The less you go, the better for your skin.

2. Apply tanning lotion

Even though your time is limited, you should still apply lotion to protect skin. This kind of lotion will help keep you from getting burnt.

3. Only go for the recommended time

Tell the specialists at the salon your skin type and how often you go tanning. They will provide a recommended time for each session. Going over time will most likely burn your skin. Limit the time you’re in a tanning bed to help prevent skin damage.

4. Always wear eye protection

UV rays can cause eye damage, too. Never take the eyewear off while in the bed. Also, always use the eyewear the salon provides to you.

5. Cover your face

The face has very sensitive skin. It’s best to cover it for most of the time while in a tanning bed because it can burn quickly. Use a towel or shirt to cover your face while in the tanning bed. If you still want a tan face, apply bronzer or tinted lotion instead.

Of course, it’s best to stop tanning and use bronzer or get spray tans instead, but if you are still going, be sure to take precautions every time. Also, talk to the specialists at the salon to find out more about their recommended precautions.
