Fall is the perfect time to exercise outdoors: It’s no longer humid, the temperatures keep you cool, and it’s a wonderful way to enjoy the weather before the snow falls.

Want to burn calories and get fit, but tired of the boring run or walk?

If you enjoy the outdoors, you will want to spend as much time exercising outdoors as possible.

4 fun ways to get active outdoors:

1. Go Hiking

Who said you couldn’t enjoy beautiful scenery while burning calories? Hiking is an effective, whole body cardio workout. As you climb over rigid terrain, you are building leg and core muscles. Even more, since you are out on a hike, you won’t have the flexibility to stop right away once you get tired, giving you opportunity to push yourself. Pick your favorite location and plan a hiking trip with family or friends. You can make it even more exciting by camping for the whole weekend. You will have so much fun exploring, it won’t even feel like a workout.

2. Play Football

There is no escaping football during the fall season. You can enjoy football without sitting on the couch and eating unhealthy snacks all day on Sunday. Get competitive by playing an afternoon football game with loved ones. Even if you lack the skills, you can still have fun with it. The game 500 is an easier football game everyone can play. You could also simply toss around the football during half time to fit some activity into your Sunday afternoon.

3. Register for a Run or Walk

There are plenty of 5K or 10K run/walks during the fall season. We’re not talking about a plain running event. Creative races have become more and more popular. There is a variety of creative running events such as Glow Runs, Mud Runs and Color Runs. You can even get into the spirit of the Halloween or Thanksgiving by participating in a Zombie Run or Turkey Run. Find a fun run matching your skill level and give it a go with some friends.

4. Go for a Bike Ride

Five miles can feel like only one when you’re enjoying a bike ride on a crisp fall day. You can ride your bike to get from point A to point B, or simply take a bike trail for an exciting afternoon outdoors. It’s a great way to save on gas costs, enjoy neighborhood scenery, and get active every day.

You will want to do all of these activities with at least one workout partner. It always helps to workout with a partner who will push you to keep going and make exercising enjoyable. It’s also nice to fit in these extra workouts in fall to give yourself a little calorie leeway for the holidays. Enjoy the season!
